L-3’s Wireless Mesh Communications System Receives Pennsylvania Approval

CHANTILLY, Va., May 21, 2009 – L-3 Global Security & Engineering Solutions (L-3 GS&ES) announced today that the L-3 ACCOLADE Wireless Mesh Communications System has been approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for use in underground bituminous coal mines, the first wireless mine communications system to be approved as such.

“We are pleased that Pennsylvania is one of a growing number of states to recognize ACCOLADE’s capacity to improve the safety and efficiency of underground coal mines,” said Jerry Bates, L-3 GS&ES President. “L-3’s integrated system allows Pennsylvania’s underground coal mines to put in place a single communications and tracking system to improve their operations.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently evaluated ACCOLADE and certified that ACCOLADE meets the requirements of the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Mine Act. All mine operators in the state of Pennsylvania are now approved to incorporate L-3’s wireless voice, data, and tracking capabilities into their mine safety plans.
